The College of Shipbuilding Engineering, dates back to the Naval Engineering Department of the PLA Military Engineering Institute, established in 1953, and is now the key for scientific research and education base in China’s shipbuilding industry, naval equipment and marine development. It has been honored with titles such as National Advanced Collective in the Education System, National Benchmark College for Party Building Work, the title of National Youth Civilization, and National University Huang Danian Teacher Group. In 2017, Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering was approved for the National Plan of “double first-class” disciplines and awarded A+ in the fourth national evaluation of academic subject carried out by the Ministry of Education of China, and awarded “one of the strongest programs in the world”.

Among the College’s 172 faculty members, 117 are full-time teachers, 7 are full-time scientific research (A1), and 26 are experimental technicians. There are 22 full-time post-doctor, 49 senior professional titles and 71 deputy senior professional titles, with 1 academician of the Chinese Academy of Engineering, and 16 national-level talents, 61 part-time guest professors at home and abroad. There are 72 PhD student supervisors and 113 master student supervisors. In the past 5 years, the average annual scientific research fund has increased to 266 million Yuan. The College has published more than 2,000 research papers and 40 books. Over 50 scientific research achievements have won national and provincial awards.

The College offers 3 undergraduate programs, namely, naval architecture and marine engineering; port, channel and coastal engineering; and marine robotics. “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” “Mechanics” and “Hydraulic Engineering” have approved as the first-level master programs. The master program of “Civil Hydraulic Engineering” has also been approved and certified. The college has 2 first-level PhD programs: “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” and “Mechanics”. The college has a Center for Post-doctoral Studies of “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering”. It has 1 national key discipline, 2 key disciplines for national defense, and 1 provincial-level key discipline in Heilongjiang Province. “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” and “Port, Channel and Coast Engineering” were selected as national first-class undergraduate program. The discipline of “Naval Architecture and Marine Engineering” is a national first-class undergraduate program, a national-level featured major, a national comprehensive pilot reform major, a national pilot major for the Excellent Engineer Education Program, a key major by the Commission of Science, Technology, and Industry for National Defense, and a key major in Heilongjiang Province. The discipline of “Port, Channel and Coast Engineering” has obtained the national engineering education professional certification and is a first-class undergraduate program of Heilongjiang Province. 

The college has 4 national scientific research platforms, including one national key laboratory of autonomous marine vehicle technology, one national key laboratory of hydrodynamics (participation), one national key laboratory of hydropower equipment (Participation), and one national key laboratory of ship structure safety (participation). There are 3 national teaching platforms, including one national experimental teaching demonstration center for naval architecture and marine engineering (Harbin Engineering University), one national maritime virtual simulation experiment teaching center, and one virtual teaching and research room, there are also 10 provincial and ministerial level research platforms.

The College established the international organization named International Association of Innovation and Cooperation in Naval Architecture & Marine Engineering (ICNAME). It has been approved one international joint research center for naval architecture and marine engineering mechanics, one China-Russia joint laboratory for polar technology and equipment, and one Ministry of Education international joint laboratory for naval architecture and marine engineering technology. In the past five years, more than 10 high-level international conferences have been held.

The College has been collaborating with many internationally renowned universities, and classification societies, domestic shipbuilding enterprise and research institutes have set up a number of scholarships in the college. In recent years, the college has won honors such as the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Committee, the National May Fourth Red Flag Youth League Branch, the national university graduate student Model Party Branch, and nearly 20 students have won national honors such as the most beautiful college students, college students of the Year, and the star of self-improvement. In total, it has won more than 30 awards from national super first-class competitions such as the China International College Student Innovation Competition and the Gold Medal of the "Challenge Cup" National College Student Business Plan Competition, and has won nearly 100 awards from provincial and above innovation and entrepreneurship competitions annually. The student employment rate has always been above 95%, the undergraduate enrollment rate exceeded 73%, and over 70% of the graduates are employed in the shipbuilding industry. (Date updated:August 2024)
