July 31, 2023

I. Team Introduction

The Ship and Ocean Engineering Experiment Center at Harbin Engineering University originated from the Gravity Ship Model Water Tank Laboratory and Structural Laboratory of the Naval Engineering Department at Harbin Military Engineering Institute (Harbin Arsenal) in 1953. Academician Gu Maoxiang is the founder of these two laboratories. In 2009, it was approved as a national-level experimental teaching demonstration center for ship and ocean engineering, and in 2015, it was approved as a national-level virtual simulation experimental teaching center for ship and ocean engineering. It is the only national-level dual-center for experimental teaching in the field of ship and ocean engineering.

The construction area of the experiment center is 14,000 square meters, with 1,429 sets of various instruments and equipment, with a total value exceeding 110 million yuan. The center has 27 full-time experimental technicians, with more than 80% of them holding senior professional titles or doctoral degrees. Relying on the A+ discipline, the experiment center specializes in experimental research projects and experimental technology development in the field of ship and ocean engineering. It has accumulated rich experimental technology and experience and has trained a large number of experimental technicians.

II. Experimental Conditions

Currently, the center has various large-scale experimental facilities in the field of mechanics, including a comprehensive test water tank, depressurization water tank, high-speed towing water tank, horizontal circulating water tank, wave tank, and structural experiment platform. It is also equipped with auxiliary equipment such as X-Y carriages, multi-directional wave-making systems, depressurization systems, air-entrained nuclear systems, high-speed camera systems, planar motion mechanisms, multi-point coordinated loading systems, and high-pressure test systems. It also possesses various modern measurement and testing systems, such as a four-degree-of-freedom navigation simulator, waterproof six-component scales, high-precision particle image velocimetry systems, dynamic data acquisition instruments, structural strain mode analysis instruments, and vibration noise comprehensive testing systems. The experimental capabilities of the center are at an advanced level in China.

The experiment center can not only carry out conventional ship model resistance, wave endurance, propulsion, maneuverability, and large-scale structure strength and fatigue tests but also has advanced experimental technologies such as QT emergency buoyancy, self-propelled models in complex sea conditions, synchronous measurement of hydrodynamics and fine flow fields, a full series of cross-medium water entry and exit tests, structural health monitoring, ocean energy development, and polar engineering ice-related tests. The experiment center has completed more than 50 longitudinal scientific research experimental projects funded by various sources, such as the National 973 Program, the National 863 Program, the National Key Science and Technology Project, and the National Natural Science Foundation. It has also conducted numerous horizontal experimental project collaborations with large enterprises and institutions such as China Shipbuilding Corporation, China Aerospace Science and Technology Group, and China National Offshore Oil Corporation, receiving unanimous praise.

III. Honors and Achievements

With the goal of fostering students' independent innovation ability and engineering practice ability, the experiment center has achieved fruitful results in the field of experimental teaching through continuous reforms and explorations. In recent years, teachers have completed more than 20 experimental teaching reforms, won three provincial and ministerial-level teaching achievement awards, published more than ten textbooks and compiled more than 20 experimental textbooks. They have also published over 100 papers on teaching reforms and experimental technology, and students have won more than 100 national-level awards for scientific and technological innovation.
