1953, the Shipbuilding Department was established, having “Naval vessel Design and Manufacture” specialties.

1971, the Department of ship Engineering was established, including Submarine Design and Manufacturing, Surface Ship Design and Manufacturing.

1985, it was renamed the Department of Ship and Ocean Engineering.

1997, two disciplines: Modern Ship Design & Manufacturing, and Ship Mechanics, were approved as the Key Construction Projects in China’s universities ( the “211 Project”).

1998, the above-mentioned two disciplines were united into “Ship and Ocean Engineering” .

2000, Heilongjiang Water Transport Planning Design Institute was merged into this Department.

2001, the College of Shipbuilding Engineering was established on the basis of the Department of Ship and Ocean Engineering.

2009, it was approved as “National Experimental Teaching Demonstration Centre for Ships and Ocean Engineering”.

2015, according to the orientations of the disciplines’ education and research, and the existing basic adjustments, following units were set up in the college: Marine Vehicle Technology Research Institute, Marine Engineering Technology Research Institute, Ship and Ocean Platform General Technology Research Institute, Institute of Marine and Ocean Engineering Fluid Mechanics, Ship and Ocean Engineering Structure Institute of Mechanics, Marine and Ocean Engineering Experimental Centre.

2017, its discipline of ship and marine engineering was listed as one of the “double first-rate” disciplines and was awarded A+ in the fourth round of national assessment.
