1. Introduction to the Institute

Heilongjiang Water Transportation Planning and Design Institute (Heilongjiang Water Transportation Scientific Research Institute) was established in 1978, is the only comprehensive research and design unit in Heilongjiang water system integrating ship design, national land planning, water transportation engineering survey and design, and in August 2000, as an independent legal entity formally merged into Harbin Engineering University. Harbin Engineering University is subordinate to the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology of the People's Republic of China, and is one of the "Seven National Defense Schools" and the "Northeast Five Schools", with "Three Seas and One Nuclear" (Shipbuilding Industry, Naval Equipment, Deep-sea Engineering, and Nuclear Power) as its schooling characteristics. With "three seas and one nuclear" (shipbuilding industry, naval equipment, deep-sea engineering, nuclear power) as the characteristics of school running, is China's "three seas and one nuclear" in the field of the largest high-level personnel training base and an important scientific research base. It is the first batch of national key universities, the first batch of universities with the right to confer doctoral degrees, the first batch of universities to enter the national "211 Project" key construction universities, and the first batch of universities to enter the national "985 Advantageous Discipline Innovation Platform" project construction universities in 2011.

Heilongjiang Institute of Water Transportation Planning and Design, through a reasonable combination of the advantages of engineering universities and high-level talent advantages, so that the Institute's comprehensive capacity has been greatly improved. At present, it has become a competitive ship design and research unit with development potential in China.

2. The talent team

Heilongjiang Water Transportation Planning and Design Institute has 32 full-time designers, including 2 full-time senior positions and 20 associate senior positions. There are more than 70 part-time designers, including more than 20 graduate students. The team has a clear hierarchical structure, reasonable age structure and complete professional support.

3. Student development

Since its incorporation into Harbin Engineering University, Heilongjiang Institute of Water Transportation Planning and Design, as a base for student internship and innovation training of Harbin Engineering University, has been involved in some of the school's teaching work, such as course internship, acquaintance internship, graduation design, postgraduate training, and guidance of undergraduates' innovation activities. It has supervised more than 400 undergraduates in graduation design, providing a good platform for undergraduates to learn and practice. In recent years, it has supervised more than 50 master students in their graduation design, which has cultivated their scientific research practical ability and independent innovation ability, and laid a solid foundation for their future development.

4. Direction of research

Ship design for river and sea transportation, ship design for river and lake projects, ship design for various types of ships in shallow draught and seasonal frozen waters of inland rivers, design of inland river ports and specialized wharves, design of shipyards and medium-sized civil buildings, and so on.

Over the past 30 years since the establishment of the institute, it has completed more than 400 scientific research and design projects at home and abroad, including nearly 200 ship projects. The projects such as air cushion barge and large diameter-to-depth ratio pushers have won the National Invention Award and the National Science and Technology Progress Award respectively, and a large number of ships have won the National Excellent Ship Type Award and other awards. The technology of ultra-shallow draft river-sea intermodal transportation ship, shallow draft large diameter to depth ratio propulsion technology, environmental protection reamer technology for dredgers, and research on engineering ship design are all at the advanced level in China.

Over the years, the design institute has accumulated more than 300 complete ship type archives, occupying 90% of the ship design market share in Heilongjiang, Jilin, Inner Mongolia, Liaoning (inland waterway ships) and other provinces.

In recent years, Heilongjiang Water Transportation Planning and Design Institute has made breakthroughs in the design and research and development of dredgers and high-performance vessels, and its self-designed rake suction (suction cup) dredgers and high-speed trimarans are in the leading position in China in terms of both technology and performance.
