Institute of Structural Mechanics of Marine and Offshore Engineering - Environmental Loads and Structural Strength "Xinghai" Academic Team

July 31, 2023

1. Team Introduction

The team dates back to the 1970s, after more than 50 years of development, through the continuous efforts of several generations of scholars, the team has become one of the most competitive strengths in the area of research and application of ship and offshore structures wave loads, structural mechanical properties. In 2019, the team was elected as the Harbin Engineering University "Xinghai" academic team. The team takes "basic innovation research - engineering technology - products (professional and technical services)" as its main theme. Teaching and scientific research, and engineering applications are equally emphasized.

The team has 5 professors, 3 associate professors, 1 associate researcher, 2 overseas collaborating professors, and more than 100 doctoral and master students. It offers 16 specialized core courses and optional courses. In the past five years, it has undertaken more than 80 national scientific research projects, published more than 150 papers, obtained more than 20 patents, and published 3 monographs. The team has won 1 national special award, 1 first-level, 3 second-level, and 1 third-level provincial and ministerial awards.

2. Research Foundation and Platform

The team aims at the innovations in fundamental theory and providing solutions to practical engineering problems. The team has been in close collaboration with major research institutes and industrial sectors of naval architecture and ocean engineering in China, including China Shipbuilding Group 701, 702, 708, and 719 institutes, the Civil Ship Center, China Classification Society, Dalian Shipyard, Waigaoqiao Shipyard, Hudong Shipyard, etc.

The team has been close collaborating with the University of Lisbon to form the "Joint Laboratory for International Cooperation in Ship and Ocean Engineering Technology" of the Ministry of Education. This laboratory focuses on scientific research cooperation and education (including master's degree and doctoral degree), and it is the first international joint laboratory at the ministerial level in this area in China, and it has completed the review organized by the Ministry of Education on January 28, 2019. The team is the founder of the Qingdao Key Laboratory of Environmental Adaptability of Ships and Marine Structures, which mainly carries out research on the navigational performance of large-scale models in real wave environment, fatigue and other mechanical performance tests of real ship structures at ultra-low and normal temperatures, and the development of whole-life ship structural health monitoring system.

3. Landmark achievements

1. Three-dimensional wave load calculation software system for ships and ocean engineering (COMPASS-WALCS)

In collaboration China Classification Society (CCS), the team has developed the 3D Wave Load Calculation Software System for Ships and Marine Engineering (COMPASS-WALCS). This software system has listed by Classification Society of China as authorized commercial codes for approval of drawings. The codes have more than 200 users, including 701 Institute, 708 Institute, 719 Institute, Shanghai Jiaotong University, South China University of Technology, CSIC Civil Ship Center, etc.

2. Ship and ocean engineering structure strength assessment technology

The team has developed a complete set of structural strength assessment methods for various types of ships and marine engineering structures, including yield, buckling strength, fatigue strength, ultimate strength of structures, etc. The team has provided strong technical support for the structural design and strength assessment of oil tankers, bulk carriers, container ships, large ships, many kinds of military and auxiliary ships, semi-submersible platforms, jack-up platforms, and other structural design and strength assessment of many organizations, such as China Classification Society (CCS), Institute 701, Institute 708, Shanghai Waigaoqiao, and Dalian Shipyard, etc. The team has also provided technical support for the structural design and strength assessment of oil tankers and bulk carriers.

3. Ship and Marine Engineering Structure Intelligent Perception and Safety Assessment System (SMAS)

Based on the theory of structural safety of ships and intelligent algorithms (such as self-perception, self-learning, self-decision-making, self-execution and self-adaptation, the system monitors, warns and assists in decision-making for the safety operation of ship and offshore platforms, so as to realize state perception and safety assessment covering the whole life cycle of ship structures. The system has been installed on many types of ships in China, and has been applied on China's first 10,000-ton maritime patrol vessel "Maritime Patrol 09", which has been widely reported in the press including People's Daily, Sina, Sohu, etc.
