It has attracted outstanding talents from domestic and foreign universities, such as the University of Western Australia, Nanyang Technological University, Zhejiang University, and Shanghai Jiao Tong University, forming a well-structured academic team. It has established in-depth cooperation with internationally renowned academic institutions such as the University of California, Berkeley, Brown University, University College London, the University of Twente in the Netherlands, the University of Birmingham, and the National University of Singapore in joint training of graduate students, young faculty exchange, and scientific research, providing a foundation for international talent cultivation.
The team has published 3 textbooks, undertaken 4 undergraduate courses and 6 graduate courses, and trained over 100 graduate students. Graduates have been employed by national important units such as universities, research institutes, and large state-owned enterprises and have received widespread praise and recognition. Several graduates have won academic honors such as national-level talents, outstanding doctoral dissertations in national disciplines, and the Moan-Faltinsen Award. The team has also won more than ten awards, including the National Teaching Achievement Award (Second Class), the Ministry of Education Huo Yingdong Young Teacher Award (Second Class), the Provincial Teaching Achievement Award (First Class), the Provincial Outstanding Higher Education Research Achievement Award (First Class), and the Provincial Outstanding University Teacher Award.
3. Scientific Research
The team has undertaken over 40 research projects, including national key R&D programs and National Natural Science Foundation projects. It has established the Unified Bubble Equation, known as the Zhang Equation in the academic community. With concise and elegant mathematical language, it describes the fundamental laws of bubble motion in nature and solves theoretical problems related to bubble dynamics under different sources, scales, and environments. The team has revealed the dynamic characteristics and impact load formation mechanism of near-boundary bubble series, solved the prediction problem of pulsation and jet loads of ultra-near-boundary bubbles, and achieved quantitative evaluation of near-field underwater bubble loads. They have proposed a theoretical model and method for underwater gas-liquid-solid full coupling, developed the independently intellectual property rights-based FSLAB basic industrial software for fluid-solid coupling, which has a calculation accuracy over 30% higher than commercial software, and created the largest advanced underwater special test facility in China, revealing new mechanics mechanisms and laws of ship impact. The team has also established a ship dynamics model under underwater contact impact, solved multiple key theoretical and bottleneck problems such as high-density ratio and strong discontinuity, and developed new protection technologies for large ships against impact.
The research achievements have been applied in the improvement, evaluation, and design of weak links in more than 10 types of newly developed large ships in China, as well as in the hydrodynamic demonstration and design of cross-medium navigation vehicles and impact separation evaluation and design of aerospace aircraft. They have provided strong support for many national-level research and development tasks in China. The academic achievements have been published in top journals in the field, such as JFM, JMPS, JCP, PRF, cited over 10,000 times, and authorized 45 invention patents. They have also published 3 books and 1 standard.
4. Research Conditions
The team has advanced underwater special experimental bases, as well as a series of experimental facilities such as a medium-sized water tank, a small water tank, and an experimental field. It is the largest and most advanced underwater scientific research experimental base in China, effectively supporting talent cultivation, scientific research, and model development tasks in fields such as large-scale ships, future cross-medium navigation vehicles, and deep-sea exploration.
