The research Center of Deepwater Engineering and Hydrodynamics supported by The Lloyd's Educational Trust was established in February 2011. The center consists of high-level research teams and members from University College London, Shanghai Jiao Tong University and Harbin Engineering University. The participants include Dalian Shipbuilding Industry Corporation, China Institute of Shipping of China National Shipbuilding Corporation, China Classification Society, CNOOC Engineering Design Company, COSCO Shipyard, HUAZHONG University of Science and Technology, Dalian University of Technology, Tianjin University and other well-known institutions, enterprises and universities in the field of shipbuilding and ocean engineering.

The center is the first international research center sponsored by the Lloyd's Education Foundation in mainland China. It is dedicated to cutting-edge fundamental research in deep-sea engineering and hydrodynamics, and provides solutions to solve basic mechanical problems in deep water engineering.
