On December 28^th, Ministry of Education Degree and Postgraduate Education Development Centre made public the results of the 4th Discipline-level Assessment. The key building discipline “Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering” of our university (HEU), which is in the framework- The National World-class Universities and World-class Disciplines，was given the highest A+ grade, ranking first among all building-disciplines submitted for assessment.

Shipbuilding and Ocean Engineering Discipline of HEU was developed on the basis of the Department of Naval Engineering (Ship Manufacturing Division, Ship Power Division, Underwater Acoustic Subject ) founded in 1953. It had a complete discipline system, good foundation and rich accumulation in relevant education. The first graduate students were enrolled in 1955. This discipline was approved to be qualified in doctorate granting, within the first batch in China In 1981. It was selected as the first national key disciplines in 2007. The orientation and objectives of this Discipline is to cultivate high level engineers, industry leaders and scientists for shipbuilding industry, ocean development and Naval equipment construction, forming the main force of the basic and applied research in Marine Engineering. In addition, it became the important support to the breakthroughs in core and key general technologies and the important base for naval equipment development.

The 4th Assessment covered 95 first-level disciplines (except for 16 disciplines, such as military science). 7449 disciplines of 513 institutions were submitted for this assessment. The evaluation results were based on the principle of accurate calculation and classified presentation. According to the rank percentile of Discipline Overall Level Score, the top 70 percent of the evaluated disciplines were classified into nine categories for publication.
